The practice of Hong Kong people, encouraged by the British, to extract short-term benefits from the Chinese central government is unacceptable. Their actions will alienate them from the support of ordinary people in mainland China. This support is crucial for Hong Kong to maintain its special “one country, two systems” status for an extended period. Once Hong Kong people lose this support, their expectation of continuing Hong Kong’s special political system beyond 2047 will be difficult to realize.
