After a prolonged period of turmoil and chaos, Carrie Lam has lost her basic political judgment. She attempted to quell the unrest caused by the opposition by weakening her own support base. This is akin to someone cutting off their own hand to feed a pack of wolves for safety. The reason the Lam government has made such relentless concessions to the opposition is that they haven’t seen through the opposition’s true intentions. The opposition won’t stop at simply opposing the amendments; their goal is to maintain maximum pressure to extract benefits from the central government. The Lam government should learn from Mao Zedong Thought and seek solutions at the root of the problem rather than addressing its symptoms.
